Government of East Haven

East Haven was incorporated in 1785. John S. Tylor a selectman since 1886.  A system of government was selectmen and town meetings. When elections were held, three people with the most votes were elected selectmen. The most votes was the first selectmen. Over the years, the number of selectmen changed until it reached 7 in the 1950s.  In 1969 the system changed through a general election, from selectmen to a mayor. 
  1. Francis W. Messina became East Haven's first mayor. 1969-75 He was a republican mayor, having been the incumbent First Selectmen. In his term, he redeveloped the old East Haven Center into what we have now. On the right, are some of the old pictures of the old Center in 1966 and older. Notice, first selectmen sign, sitting in front of city hall in one of the pictures. 
  2. Anthony Proto, democrat, 1975-85. 
  3. Robert M. Norman, republican, 1985-91.
  4.  Henry J. Luzzi, democrat, 1991-97
  5. Joseph Maturo - Jr, republican, 1997-07
  6. April Capone, East Haven's youngest and first female mayor. Democrat, 2007- 2011
  7. Joseph Maturo- Jr republican        2011-present
